Range of Topics: Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem promotes and encourages the study of the history and culture of Jewry in Germany and Central Europe, across broad spheres of knowledge. The publications and activities of the Institute deal with cultural and artistic expression of prominent Jewish personalities who operated in the German-Jewish space.
The Institute also encompasses the historical development of German-speaking Jewish society in its entirety and deals with questions related to Jewish communal and religious life, to social, cultural, political, and economic processes, gender-related issues and relations of Jews with their non-Jewish environment and with other, non-German speaking Jewish communities in the world.
Activities: The Institute operates on several levels: it publishes the works of leading scholars and young researchers in the Institute’s printed series and is partner to the publication of books connected to the Institute’s fields of research. The Institute also promotes research through diverse scholarly seminars such as: an international research workshop for senior researchers, a seminar for Israeli and European post-doctorates, other assorted study-days and learning groups, and granting of scholarships to outstanding young nascent scholars every year.
The Institute organizes various types of cultural events throughout the year for the academic and broad public. These include conferences, lectures, discussion events, literary cabarets and the screening of movies accompanied by lectures and get-togethers with researchers, writers and artists. Thus the Institute has become a cultural icon and meeting-place for students, researchers and the culture-loving public.
The Institute’s archives and library amass a rich collection of rare books and documents dealing with the history and culture of German-speaking Jews. The archives and library are open to the general public, thus serving casual users as well as scholars.
